Company Goals
It’s certainly not a secret: every company has goals.
MOST WATER TREATMENT COMPANIES HAVE GOALS TO GENERATE AS MUCH ONGOING AND VARIED REVENUE AS POSSIBLE. They just love to install systems that are purposely undersized so that they will have to go back and service it as much as possible. And charge you every time, of course because every service call costs labour, vehicle, parts and overhead. These companies are all about volume, return service calls, and additional revenue streams. They know every marketing technique in the books and invest hoards of money on advertising to get your business. But marketing has absolutely no relation to product knowledge or quality. A high-quality glossy flyer is, well, a high-quality glossy flyer – that’s all.
JD LINNEN WELL DRILLING HAS A GOAL TO PROVIDE RELIABLE, LONG-LASTING SYSTEMS THAT THE HOMEOWNER OR BUSINESS CAN MAINTAIN (OCCASSIONALLY) WITHOUT ME. I really don’t want to have to come back to your house every month or every 3 months. I’d much rather provide more excellent services to more people. I consider it a failure if I have to show up more often than once every two years; at which time I’ll do an inspection of the residential water system. Often I don’t have to adjust or replace anything. I just want to earn an honest living, providing honest products and honest services to honest people and businesses, like I’ve been doing for over 30 years.
I have often fixed water problems where up to three of the top water companies have installed equipment that wouldn’t work. They have gone back on endless service calls and still couldn’t fix it. It’s hard to fault the individual employee that tries to fix it. EMPLOYEES ARE TRAINED THIS WAY AND DO NOT KNOW BETTER. After I installed a system that actually worked, no further maintenance was necessary. Stuff that worked. Right.
The On-site Visit
So, what happens when you call for water treatment?
Option: Call the big guys. They’ll send out an employee who has been through the company training session (You’ve been to those, right? Where you watch a video, listen to a speaker tell you what the video is already saying, “don’t-ask-questions-just-do-as-we-say-and-we’ll-give-you-a-certificate” training sessions), where they’ve been trained to 1. Answer your questions with canned responses (based on marketing research), 2. Test your water with a litmus strip (or something similar) with pretty colours on it, 3. Tell you that your water is no good and then, 4. Sell you their generic system that will supposedly fix your water and finally, 5. Schedule the next appointment.
Option: Call us – I’ll come out and if take a sample of your water to take to an accredited, INDEPENDENT LABORATORY to test for dozens of potential contaminants including bacteria. I have those pretty colour strips too because they are useful, but they are NOT a complete water test and bacteria CAN NOT BE TESTED FOR IN YOUR HOME. That technology just doesn’t exist as portable equipment yet. Only after I actually know for sure what is actually in your water can I advise you on what the options are for treatment. Let’s first determine what you actually need, balance that with what you want and then find the best treatment system FOR YOU.
I design and recommend a system based on your water. What if your water has several contaminants? This is very common. How does treatment for one contaminant affect the treatment of another contaminant? Do you have any health issues that need to be considered in your water treatment? It’s so important to know exactly what is in your water, who is using it, for what, how much, and where the water is coming from.
Bacteria! The truth.
Many treatment companies do not address the issue of bacteria in the water. Why would they want to? If they don’t make your water safe to drink, they can keep coming back to deliver bottled drinking water to your door (yet another source of revenue for them). See company goals above. While they’re at it, they’ll kindly deliver their company brand salt “with special additives” at an astounding markup, when what you really need is salt. Just salt. 100%, quality, pure salt – no additives.
Back to the bacteria: 99% of all water treatment is done to remove calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese, none of which are health issues except in extreme concentrations. This will make your water pretty but it may still not be safe to drink. Since the “free-in-home-water-test” can’t test for bacteria, they offer this solution: install UV lights as the final step of your water treatment as a kind of insurance policy. The thing is: UV LIGHTS DO NOT KILL BACTERIA. UV lights only disrupt the DNA in bacteria so they can’t reproduce. As an add-on at the end of the water treatment process, that means the bacteria have traveled through the entire treatment system. That’s just backwards. You can contact me and I can explain everything you wanted to know, and probably more than you realized you want to know!
I remove bacteria before I treat the water. If your water has bacteria, usually the problem originates at the source: the well. I can assess your well and advise on how to fix it, and I can fix it. ONLY A MOE LICENSED WELL TECHNICIAN can inspect and repair your well. The glossy-flyer water treatment guys are not licensed well technicians and are not qualified to provide you with advice about your well. Is your well up to standard?
